One of the major bets is a handicap bet. It is present in every bookmaker’s office. These bets allow making stakes on more beneficial terms. That’s why, the majority of professional players use this very type.
It is often the case when the score of the event is predictable, that is to say, one of the teams is much stronger. Thus, bookmakers offer small odds on money line. Such bets are not very popular among players. To get rid of the kind of situations, bookmakers invented the notion of handicap bet.
At the initial stage, handicap allows to equalize chances of competitors if the chalk has the obvious advantage over the outsider. In simple language, handicap gives a benefit expressed in figures (matches, scores, seconds etc.) It may be decimal or fractional. In addition, we may distinguish negative (chalk) and positive (outsider) handicap.
American handicap may be either negative or positive. For instance -200 and +200.
Negative handicap indicates how much you have to bet to win $100. So, according to the example above (-200), eventually you must bet $200 to have a profit of $100.
Positive handicap will help you to figure out how much you’ll get when you bet $100. Referring to the instance (+200), your profit will make up $200 if you bet $100.
As an example, we’ll take Serie A, Napoli – Parma.
Previous two events ended with a score 2:0 and 1:0.
Betcity offers the very match in the following line:
It is the type of betting used mostly in the UK to distinguish probability.
H2 (-1.5) – Team2 wins a handicap of -1.5, the odds available – 2.00 (marked red).
Clear-cut win of Team2 (marked green) – the odds – 1.38.
We may see that bookmaker makes bigger odds to the handicap Team2 win. Thus, your win would be bigger. Let’s assume that the score was 1:3, handicap was subtracted from the Team2 scores. (Why do we deduct a handicap? Because in this case it is negative. Positive handicap is usually added.) We have 1/1.5 and it means that your handicap bet was played off. Your sum would be multiplied by 2.00 (the odds).
Everything is clear with fractional handicap: you either win or lose your bet as a draw is excluded. Unfortunately, it is slowly fading away, as decimal handicap is much more common in use.
Moreover, you may easily transform fractional handicap into decimal. Imagine having 7/5, you divide 7 by 5and add 1:
Or another way:
The same teams, odds and score but the bet is F2 (-2). The game would end in a draw. In such cases, bookmakers calculate your bet as 1. That is, you neither win nor lose.
If you want to calculate the probability of the team’s win in decimal odds terms, you need:
- Expected odds of the team’s win (e.g. 80%).
- 100% divide by 80%.
The given odds are known as decimal of European handicap.
Briefly summarizing, betting odds is pretty favorable. You may significantly increase your profit if only understand the initial concept. You have to be ready to either endure damages or celebrate a victory. Nevertheless, be very attentive while making a stake. Analyze preliminary matches and events by all means! It’ll lead you up to the successful betting.
